Words from the Blacktop: A Conversation with Tim Evans, Owner of Elite Paving
Alison WilliamsNo Student Debt. No Cubicles. Just Work That Matters.
If you have ever stood ankle deep in gravel with a shovel in your hand and sweat in your eyes, you know this is more than work. It is legacy.
We sat down with Tim Evans to talk about what it means to be in the trades today. When we asked what he would tell someone just getting started, he kept it simple.
“There’s a lot of opportunity in the trades and a lot of pride in being part of the crew that builds the stuff this country runs on.”
Fast track to real life
According to Tim, the jobsite teaches faster than any classroom.
“You learn real life lessons out here, and you learn them fast. Honestly, I think you grow up quicker on a jobsite than you do in a classroom or behind a desk.”
On the job you learn to solve problems, hustle, and show up when it is 100 degrees in the shade. You learn to rely on your crew, and they learn to rely on you.
A paycheck with purpose
It is not only about grit. It is also about a solid living.
“These days, most tradespeople are making more money than college grads and without all the student debt.”
Real skills, real pay, and a clear path forward. That is the pitch. And for a lot of people, it is the right one.
Where to start
Tim keeps the advice simple. Show up early. Be coachable. Ask questions. Keep your area clean. Learn the basics of safety and tool care. Respect the crew and the schedule. Do that and you will get chances to learn more.
How you grow
First you learn to be reliable. Then you learn a task, then a system, then the job as a whole. That can lead to running work, estimating, or even owning a business. The path is there if you want it.
Final word
If you want work that teaches you fast and pays you for what you can do, step onto a crew. Bring your effort. The rest you can learn.
