From the Blacktop Up. The Story Behind Our Name

Alison Williams

Some names are just labels. Ours is a story. Vintage Blacktop Co. stands for grit, heritage, and the quiet power of people who build the world from the ground up.

Why Vintage?

"Vintage" is more than just a style. It’s a mindset. It speaks of the old school values we stand for: hard work, honesty, pride in your craft, and the kind of character that’s built over time, not bought overnight. We’re about honoring the legacy of those who came before us while making space for a new generation to rise. Because what’s timeless is what lasts.

Why Blacktop?

Because that’s where it all starts. Asphalt, concrete, gravel, it’s the foundation beneath our feet. It's where tradespeople clock in, build their lives, and leave their mark (sometimes literally). Blacktop is sweat, heat, and hustle. It represents the real work being done every day that keeps this country moving and we wear that with pride.

What We’re Really About

Vintage Blacktop Co. isn’t just about what you wear, it’s about what you stand for. We’re here to shift the narrative around skilled labor, especially for women and young people who’ve been left out of the trade’s conversation for too long.

Our gear is a symbol, but our mission is about education, access, and representation. We’re building a bridge between the old school and the next wave, through mentorship, storytelling, and opening doors to trade programs across the country.

So yeah, the name might look good on a hoodie. But it’s built on something real. Just like the people we stand for.

Where to Start: A Beginner’s Guide to Getting into the Trades

So, you’re curious about a career in the trades, but not sure where to start? You’re not alone. Whether you’re fresh out of high school, changing lanes midlife, or simply tired of desk jobs that don’t spark purpose, the trades offer a real path forward: hands on work, solid pay, and the kind of pride that comes from building something that lasts.

At Vintage Blacktop Co., we’re here to help you get there.

  1. Know What’s Out There
“Skilled trades” covers a lot: paving, welding, carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, heavy equipment operation, and beyond. Some are outdoors. Some are inside. Some lead to owning your own business one day. Do a little research to see what lights you up because there’s no one size fits all path here.
  2. Don’t Sleep on Trade School or Apprenticeships
You don’t need a four year degree to get started. Trade schools and apprenticeship programs can have you working (and earning) in a fraction of the time and without the mountain of debt. Bonus? You’re learning from people who’ve done the work, not just read about it.
  3. Get Local, Get Connected
Many communities have programs that partner with unions, trade schools, or local businesses. Check out organizations like SkillsUSA, Skillpoint Alliance, your local workforce board, or even job fairs specifically for trades. If you’re not seeing anything near you, DM us. We’ll help you find it.
  4. Find a Mentor
This industry still runs on relationships. Talk to someone who’s already doing the work you want to do. Ask questions. Offer to shadow. Many tradespeople are more than willing to pass down what they’ve learned, you just have to ask.
  5. Start Where You Are
It’s okay if you don’t have it all figured out yet. Show up. Learn. Try. Fail. Try again. Every person in this industry started at zero. What matters is that you start.

The Bottom Line

There’s no shame in not knowing where to begin. But there’s power in deciding to move forward. The trades are calling, and the world needs more people like you to answer.

Have questions? We’re building a hub of resources to guide you. Stick around. This is just the beginning.
